I’ve seen so many girls being told that ‘you’re not pretty enough’ or ‘change yourself because guys will be guys’ and even ‘your opinions don’t matter’ to the point they start to believe it themselves. They figure it must be their ‘fate’ as it is for the other 4.06 billion women around the globe. To say it’s ridiculous would be a massive understatement. Why do women till date have to look over the shoulders while crossing the street? Why do they feel the absolute need to change themselves in order to feel an ounce of security? Why do they still have to bite their tongues just so they don’t unknowingly strike someone’s pathetic ego? In what world is it fair for innocent people to live in terror because some people are incapable of controlling themselves? People focus to keep their daughters safe; and that implies them coming home early and not wearing something ‘revealing’. But why? Why don’t people tell their sons to come home early so women can roam around freely? Or to move out with a blindfold since it’s so impeccably ‘difficult’ to control themselves? If we don’t blame the victims of murder and tell them it’s their fault because they looked like they were ‘asking for’ being tortured and outright brutalized, then why do we tell it to those who have to go through the horrendous act of rape? Why because they are women? 49% of the world population comprises of women so why is it that only they have to live with the feeling of constant uncomfort? Women are considered to be vulnerable and therefore are known to be ‘weak’. Physically- yes. Men and women philologically are different from each other. But why do we only consider that on default? A person going through constant mental torment is not to be considered weak or impotent under the right mind. Be it in the form of continuous and pretty much absurd judgement or growing insecurities or self-doubt, it’s torture nonetheless. The society questions women every step of the way, from being born to the very last day of her existence she is told what’s expected out of her. And freedom then becomes a luxury to her. All I ask is why; why when freedom is considered as a basic human right globally, it is an extravagant amenity to some. In the 21st century, we still consider basic human decency to be some sort of a privilege alone proves we have thoroughly failed as a society.
