Embracing Peculiarity

By Myra Gupta

In a world where every idea is copy pasted and cultivated into ‘trends’, it’s hard to find a place for your niche while making it worthwhile. The thought of not being successful drives people away from merely trying to put it out in the world. In the confined box that is social media, it is easy to lose yourself to the thoughts of someone on the glowing screen.

Every mind has a light buried deep inside, bursting with a vision that’s original to them, aching to be free. Some may view peculiarity as just something out of the box, something not “for” the world to see. Or simply subject it as trash. Individuality and authenticity have lost all meaning in the endless sea of repeated content EVERYWHERE.

Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Picasso, and Dali are some of the masters whose lives have been discussed and documented like no other, and why so? They let that creativity flow out into some of the most controversial but prized works for centuries.

“Pablo Picasso’s huge 1937 mural Guernica, which depicts the massacre of a Basque village in 1937, has since become a representation of every city ever bombed. It is one of the most powerful artistic against fascism, and has been a point of contention throughout the years due to its strong, critical message.”

Throughout history, artists have been causing controversy and backlash, attempting to ridicule the dominant structures in society, and provoking people to see life differently. After all, isn’t the goal of the artist to shed light on new ways through their artworks? And, isn’t the goal of a human to grow with originality and ideas, and not just be a cog in the machine?

How should one embrace the peculiarity? Let that light blind everyone in the way. Embrace the weirdness that labels one as unordinary. Why would one want to blend in when you can stand out for something so fully and truthfully yours. Seeing your name engraved on stones and plaques is a dream- and the only way to do so is to knaw yourself away from the small confined box that is the thoughts of today.

Embrace what makes you, you. The peculiarity already knows how to shine. And one day, when you let it out, it will make you someone worthwhile.
